China’s President Xi Jinping Expresses Condolences to Nepal Over Devastating Landslides and Floods, Pledges Humanitarian Support

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed deep condolences over the heavy loss of life and destruction caused by devastating mudslides, landslides and floods in Nepal. He also assured Nepal of China’s readiness to provide rescue and humanitarian assistance as recovery efforts continue.

In a condolence message sent Friday to Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel, Xi expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Chinese government and people for those killed and conveyed sincere sympathy to bereaved families, injured people and residents of the disaster-affected areas.

Xi said a severe mudslide struck the Gyirong–Rasuwa border crossing area between China and Nepal, causing heavy casualties, leaving people missing and resulting in significant property losses.

The death toll has reportedly risen to around 469, with most of the casualties in Nepal, while more than 1,000 people remain missing, including foreign tourists and pilgrims. Rescue operations are continuing, with helicopters being used in some areas because roads and bridges have been destroyed.

All-Out Efforts to Find Missing People

Xi said China is making every effort to search for and rescue missing people. Authorities are also working to relocate affected residents to safety, provide timely medical treatment and reduce casualties.

He said measures are also being taken to prevent secondary disasters as rescue and relief operations continue.

Beijing Pledges Continued Support

Xi said China and Nepal are connected by mountains and rivers and share a common destiny, stressing the importance of supporting Nepal during the disaster.

China is ready to continue providing support and assistance within its capabilities to Nepal’s ongoing rescue operations, Xi said.

He expressed confidence that the peoples of China and Nepal would work together to overcome the disaster and rebuild affected homes and communities as soon as possible.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang Also Sends Condolences

On the same day, Chinese Premier Li Qiang sent a separate message of condolence to Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

The messages from China’s top leadership underscore Beijing’s support for Nepal as the country continues to confront the devastating impact of the disaster.

Search and rescue operations remain underway, with authorities prioritizing the search for missing people, treatment of the injured and delivery of emergency assistance to affected communities.
