EU Rejects Iran’s ‘Terrorist Army’ Declaration, Calls for Diplomatic Dialogue – Anouar El Anouni

On Monday, the European Union (EU) rejected Iran’s announcement, in which Iran had labeled European armies as “terrorist groups.” The EU stated that maintaining diplomatic engagement with Tehran remains an important part of its foreign policy.

EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said, “We completely reject the announcement of listing European armies in this way and the accusation of terrorism.” He added, “Even after listing the IRGC as a terrorist organization, we expect diplomatic channels to remain open. Maintaining open channels with Iran is a key part of our strategy.”

El Anouni also noted that summoning EU ambassadors in Tehran is “a diplomatic practice under the Vienna Convention.”

Previously, Iran had declared European armies as “terrorist groups,” following the EU’s decision to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This step was taken amid recent protests in Iran over the economic crisis and government crackdowns.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated on Sunday that the decision was made “under Article 7 of the Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organisation.
