Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Expresses Condolences Over Devastating Floods and Landslides in Nepal, Calls for Humanitarian Support

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep condolences over the heavy loss of life and widespread destruction caused by devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal. She also proposed that, if requested by Kathmandu, Saidpur Airport could be used as a humanitarian logistics hub to support Nepal’s relief and rescue operations.
In a statement, Sheikh Hasina referred to the severe situation in Timure, Syabrubesi and Rasuwagadhi in Nepal’s Rasuwa district following the sudden floods. She said the disaster had caused immense suffering for families and communities, with lives lost, many people still missing and countless families facing uncertainty and destruction.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Hasina prayed for the speedy recovery of those affected and for the safe rescue of people who remain missing.
Hasina Highlights Bangladesh–Nepal Friendship
Sheikh Hasina described Bangladesh and Nepal as close and friendly countries, linked by history, geography, culture, regional cooperation and the shared aspirations of their peoples.
She also recalled her 2018 visit to Kathmandu for the Fourth BIMSTEC Summit, saying she remembered the warmth, dignity and resilience of the Nepali people with deep respect and affection.
Call for Regional Solidarity
Hasina stressed the importance of neighboring countries standing together during natural disasters.
She said Bangladesh understands the devastating consequences of floods, river erosion, earthquakes and climate-related disasters and has historically supported Nepal and other friendly countries during times of crisis.
According to Hasina, the latest disaster highlights South Asia’s shared vulnerability to climate change, sudden floods, landslides, fragile mountain ecosystems and extreme weather.
She called for stronger regional cooperation in early-warning systems, disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, river management, data sharing and humanitarian response, noting that such disasters do not respect national borders.
Saidpur Airport Offered as Humanitarian Logistics Hub
As a potential practical measure to support Nepal’s relief operations, Hasina proposed using Saidpur Airport as a humanitarian logistics hub if the Nepalese government requests such assistance.
The proposal could facilitate the movement of relief supplies and other emergency assistance to Nepal. However, there has been no immediate indication that Kathmandu has formally requested such support.
Tribute to Rescue Workers
Sheikh Hasina also expressed respect for rescue workers, security personnel, medical teams, local authorities, volunteers and ordinary citizens working under extremely difficult conditions to save lives.
She praised their courage and humanitarian efforts as rescue and relief operations continue across the affected areas.
Authorities in Nepal remain focused on locating missing people, treating the injured and delivering essential humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the disaster.
