Former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Arrested by UK Police Over Suspected Misconduct in Public Office

UK police have arrested former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct while performing official duties. The arrest took place on the day he celebrated his 66th birthday.
Police have stated that the arrest allows them to search his home and properties and collect necessary evidence. Andrew has consistently and firmly denied any wrongdoing.
Assistant Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Oliver Wright, said, “After a thorough assessment, we have now commenced an investigation into allegations of misconduct in public office.” However, this does not directly indicate any confirmed criminal offense, and no formal charges have yet been filed.
BBC royal correspondent Sean Coughlan described the event as a “news earthquake.” Searches are underway at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, with police maintaining a presence at the gates.
So far, police have not confirmed any direct connection between Andrew and the Jeffrey Epstein case. However, according to investigative information, allegations suggest that some documents were handed to Epstein while Andrew served as a trade envoy.
Former Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Dal Babu stated, “Through this arrest, the police will gain access to computers, files, photos, and other evidence.” Additionally, officers may search any other premises owned or controlled by him.
Andrew can be held in police custody for up to 96 hours, though this requires multiple extensions from senior officers and magistrate courts. Typically, suspects are held for 12–24 hours before being charged or released for further investigation. While in custody, he will be kept in a suite-like room containing only a bed and a toilet.
Allegations of misconduct in public office are complex cases. Police must examine four key points: whether the individual was a public official, whether the incident occurred as part of their official duties, whether their conduct undermined public trust, and whether the act was carried out without reasonable excuse or justification.
The arrest has caused a significant stir in the country’s politics and royal family. King Charles released a statement saying, “The law must take its course.”
This marks the first time in history that a former prince has been arrested over allegations of misconduct in public office. Investigations are ongoing, and a decision on whether to formally charge him will follow once detailed evidence has been collected.
