Icelandic Foreign Minister Calls Out Netanyahu at UN General Assembly, Says Those Blocking Peace Are “Morally Cowardly”

New York, United States | September 27, 2026 | The Global Journal

Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir has responded to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks describing critics of Israel as “morally cowardly” at the United Nations General Assembly. She said that refusing to engage in negotiations for a just and lasting peace, blocking humanitarian assistance, and repeatedly showing disrespect for international law are themselves examples of moral cowardice.

In her address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Gunnarsdóttir warned that the suffering of Palestinian civilians must not become “background noise” to the world. According to Al Jazeera, she highlighted that children are still being killed in Gaza, families are losing their homes, and parents are repeatedly struggling to keep their children alive.

Who Are the “Morally Cowardly”? Icelandic Foreign Minister Responds

Referring to Netanyahu’s use of the phrase “morally cowardly,” Gunnarsdóttir said:

“We have heard the words ‘morally cowardly’ from this podium. To me, the morally cowardly are those world leaders who refuse to sit down and negotiate for a just and lasting peace.”

She further stated:

“Those who block the delivery of humanitarian assistance to people in desperate need are morally cowardly. And those who repeatedly disrespect international law are morally cowardly.”

Gaza’s Suffering Must Not Be Ignored

Emphasizing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Iceland’s foreign minister said the suffering of Palestinian civilians must not be treated as normal or something the world can overlook.

She highlighted the deaths of children, the displacement of families, and the continued struggle of parents to keep their children safe.

“Destruction and Reconstruction” Are Not Enough—The Root Causes Must Be Addressed

Gunnarsdóttir said the international community cannot accept a recurring cycle of destruction and reconstruction in Gaza without addressing the underlying problems.

Her remarks emphasized the need for lasting peace, guaranteed humanitarian access, and respect for international law.

Her address at the United Nations comes amid continued international discussions over the safety of civilians in Gaza, humanitarian access, and a lasting political resolution to the conflict.
