Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth Meets Nepal PM Balendra Shah After Being Conferred Honorary General Rank

Indian Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth met Nepal’s Prime Minister and Defence Minister Balendra Shah on Tuesday. The meeting took place at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu, with strengthening the longstanding defence and military ties between India and Nepal high on the agenda.

General Seth held the meeting as part of his three-day official visit to Nepal. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava was also present.

A day earlier, Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel conferred General Dhiraj Seth with the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army at a ceremony in Kathmandu. The honour is part of the longstanding tradition under which India and Nepal reciprocally confer the honorary rank of General on the chiefs of each other’s armies.

During his visit, General Seth also met Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff, General Ashok Raj Sigdel. The two military chiefs discussed matters of mutual interest and ways to further strengthen bilateral military cooperation.

General Seth also handed over military and medical equipment to the Nepali Army. He visited the Nepal Army Headquarters, where he planted a sapling and received a guard of honour.

The Indian Army said the honorary rank reflects the mutual trust, professional respect and longstanding friendship between the two armies. General Seth’s August 17–19 visit is expected to further deepen military cooperation and ties between India and Nepal.
