India’s Powerful Space-Based Technology to Strengthen Air Defence Against Missile Attacks — How Effectively Could It Counter Pakistan?

India is developing space-based early-warning technology to further strengthen its air-defence capabilities against potential missile attacks from Pakistan. The technology is designed to detect missile launches within seconds, giving ground-based radars and defence systems more time to prepare for an incoming threat.
During Operation Sindoor, an Indian defence system reportedly detected and intercepted a high-speed missile heading toward Delhi over Sirsa in Haryana just one or two minutes before its expected impact. Reducing reliance on such a narrow response window is one of the key objectives of India’s space-based missile-warning efforts.
Detection Within Seconds From Space
During the initial stage of a ballistic missile launch, its engines generate enormous heat. This produces a strong infrared signature that can potentially be detected by specialized sensors positioned in space.
Ground-based radars cannot always directly observe distant launch sites because of the curvature of the Earth. Satellite-based infrared sensors, however, can monitor relevant areas and potentially detect the thermal signature of a missile shortly after launch, transmitting an early warning to ground-based systems.
According to Anirudh Sharma, founder and CEO of space-intelligence company Digantara, time is one of the most critical factors in modern missile defence. Even a few seconds of additional warning could provide more time to analyze a missile’s trajectory and potential impact point and activate defensive measures.
The Three Phases of a Ballistic Missile
A ballistic missile generally passes through three major phases: boost, midcourse and terminal.
During the boost phase, the missile’s engines are active. It then enters the midcourse phase, following a ballistic trajectory that may partly extend beyond the atmosphere. Finally, during the terminal phase, the missile descends rapidly toward its target.
A major advantage of space-based sensors is the ability to provide warning during the boost phase. This could allow defence systems to begin tracking a threat earlier rather than relying primarily on last-minute interception.
How Much Advantage Could India Gain Against Pakistan?
Because India and Pakistan are geographically close, the response time available during a missile attack can be extremely limited. Depending on the missile type, launch location and target, an attack could occur within only a few minutes.
In such a scenario, space-based early warning could provide India with at least three major advantages.
First, India could receive an alert almost immediately after launch. Second, ground-based radars could use the early information to focus on the relevant area more quickly. Third, command-and-control systems could gain additional time to prepare an interception.
In other words, where the final few minutes may currently be critical, space-based warning could allow India’s defence network to become active much earlier.
DRDO’s Ballistic Missile Defence Capability
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing multiple technologies for ballistic missile defence. In June this year, the organisation said it had successfully demonstrated the capability to intercept incoming ballistic missiles both outside and inside the atmosphere.
If integrated with space-based early-warning systems, these capabilities could contribute to a more coordinated Indian missile-defence architecture.
However, detecting a missile launch alone does not guarantee a successful interception. Accurate tracking, target identification, command decisions and effective interceptors are all required.
MIRVs and Decoys Could Pose Major Challenges
The development of MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology could create an additional challenge for India’s missile-defence network.
MIRV-capable missiles can carry multiple warheads and potentially decoys, forcing defence systems to deal with several possible targets simultaneously.
Ballistic missiles launched from submarines also present a complex challenge because they can be fired from vast areas of the ocean. Effective satellite coverage and rapid detection would therefore be particularly important.
A Few Extra Minutes Could Make a Major Difference
In a hypothetical scenario, a space-based infrared sensor could detect a missile’s thermal signature within seconds of launch. The warning could then be transmitted to India’s command-and-control network, allowing the defence architecture to activate rapidly.
Ground-based radars could subsequently refine the missile’s trajectory, while commanders could assess whether and when to deploy interceptors.
However, this is only a hypothetical example. Actual response times would depend on the missile’s speed and type, launch location, trajectory, and the positioning of India’s sensors and interceptors.
Can India’s ‘Eyes in Space’ Stop Pakistan’s Missiles?
India’s space-based early-warning capabilities could significantly strengthen its missile-defence architecture, but they would not constitute an impenetrable shield.
Their primary advantage is time. The faster a missile launch is detected, the earlier India can begin responding and potentially create opportunities for interception at multiple stages of the missile’s flight.
Successful defence, however, would still require advanced satellites, powerful radars, accurate tracking, rapid command-and-control systems and capable interceptors.
Potential Impact on Strategic Deterrence
Space-based early warning could also have implications beyond missile defence. If both sides know that missile launches can be detected and verified rapidly, the potential advantage of a surprise first strike could be reduced.
Therefore, India’s development of “eyes in space” is not only about intercepting Pakistani missiles. It could also contribute to early warning, strategic stability and reducing the risk of unintended escalation in South Asia.
Ultimately, the key question is not simply how quickly India can detect a Pakistani missile launch, but how quickly that information can be converted into an accurate and effective defensive decision. In the future India-Pakistan missile-defence competition, decision time could become one of the most valuable strategic assets.
