Iran Warns South Korea Against Any US-Backed Military Presence in Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, IRAN | SEPTEMBER 7, 2026 | THE GLOBAL JOURNAL

Iran has warned South Korea that any military presence or participation in military activities in the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz with US support would be regarded as direct support for what Tehran describes as US “aggression.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei issued the warning to South Korea on Monday in a post written in Korean on social media platform X.

Baghaei said Iran and South Korea have maintained relations for more than 64 years, built on mutual respect. He also stressed that Tehran attaches great importance to its friendly relations with Seoul.

However, he said Iran would view the military presence or participation of any foreign country in military activities in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz differently given the current regional situation.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said the Iranian people are currently defending themselves against what Tehran describes as aggressive actions. Under such circumstances, he warned, any military presence or participation in military activities in the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz would be considered direct support for the aggressor and could have “serious consequences.”

Baghaei further said that no sovereign and responsible government should bow to US pressure and participate in what he described as “aggressive and despicable acts” against Iran.

Iran’s warning comes at a time of growing international concern over regional security and military activity surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. As one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, any military escalation around the strait could have wider implications for international trade and energy supplies.

However, as of the time of this report, no independently verified detailed information was publicly available regarding whether South Korea had formally decided to deploy military forces to the Strait of Hormuz or participate in any military activities there.

Iran’s statement is therefore being viewed as a direct diplomatic and military warning to South Korea. It also makes clear that Tehran considers any foreign military presence in the Strait of Hormuz to be a highly sensitive security issue with the potential for serious consequences.
