North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has celebrated the completion of 10,000 new homes in Pyongyang, state media KCNA reported on Tuesday. The country is preparing for the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party.
For the past several months, Kim has been inspecting various construction sites in Pyongyang and highlighting the government’s progress. The upcoming Ninth Congress in February will be North Korea’s largest political gathering, where past performance will be reviewed, new policies will be set, and leadership changes may occur.
On Monday, Kim attended the completion ceremony for 10,000 homes in the Hwasong District of Pyongyang. KCNA reported that this milestone fulfills the goal of 50,000 new homes in the metropolitan area set during the Eighth Congress five years ago.
Quoting KCNA, Kim said, “Based on the transformational achievements of the Eighth period, the Ninth Party Congress will set grander goals for restoration and creation.”
Meanwhile, KCNA reported that the representatives and attendees for the upcoming party congress arrived in Pyongyang on Monday. Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, noted that in 2016 and 2021, the congress also began three to four days after the representatives arrived in Pyongyang.
