Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Arrives in Tehran as Diplomatic Efforts Intensify to De-escalate Iran–U.S. Conflict

Pakistan’s Army Chief and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has arrived in Tehran as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the ongoing Iran–U.S. conflict and promote regional peace and security. He was accompanied by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The two Pakistani officials were received in Tehran by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Pakistan has described the visit as part of Islamabad’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
Iran–U.S. Conflict at the Center of Talks
According to Reuters, one of the key objectives of Munir’s visit is to advance efforts toward peace talks between Iran and the United States. Pakistan has played a role in facilitating communication between the two sides this year.
According to Pakistani officials, discussions could include a potential Iran–U.S. understanding, the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the threat of new U.S. sanctions against Iran, and the broader regional security situation.
Recent defence cooperation between Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, along with other security developments in the Middle East, could also feature in the discussions.
Munir Reportedly Spoke With Trump Before Tehran Visit
Reuters also reported that Munir spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump before traveling to Tehran.
According to Pakistani sources, Trump urged Munir to use Pakistan’s influence to encourage Iran to return to negotiations. The White House did not immediately comment on the reported conversation.
The timing of the reported call ahead of Munir’s Tehran visit has drawn renewed attention to Pakistan’s potential role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.
Pressure Over Sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz
Munir’s visit comes as pressure from Washington over possible new and tougher sanctions against Iran continues to grow.
The Strait of Hormuz has also emerged as one of the central issues in the current crisis. As one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, the security of the strait and the resumption of normal commercial shipping have become matters of international concern.
According to Reuters, reducing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz could also become an important element in broader efforts to reach an understanding between Iran and the United States.
Pakistan’s Role in Regional Diplomacy
Pakistan has previously attempted to mediate between Iran and the United States, although those efforts were disrupted by renewed conflict and deep mistrust between the two sides.
Islamabad is now seeking to rebuild channels of communication and create conditions for renewed diplomacy. Munir’s participation gives the effort added political and security significance.
As a result, Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran is being viewed not simply as a bilateral Pakistan–Iran engagement, but as part of a broader diplomatic effort aimed at de-escalating the Iran–U.S. conflict, strengthening regional security and creating space for renewed peace negotiations.
However, details of Munir’s meetings in Tehran and any specific agreements reached during the visit have not yet been publicly disclosed.
