President Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire "Over" as U.S. Agrees to Continue Talks Amid Renewed Hostilities

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is "over," even as Washington agreed to continue diplomatic negotiations with Tehran, highlighting the increasingly uncertain state of relations between the two longtime rivals.
In a post published Friday on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had requested the continuation of negotiations but stressed that the United States no longer considers the ceasefire to be in effect.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Trump wrote.
The announcement comes after several days of renewed military exchanges between the two countries. According to U.S. and Iranian reports, Iran targeted commercial shipping routes and launched drones and missiles at American military assets across West Asia, prompting retaliatory U.S. airstrikes against Iranian military targets.
The renewed violence follows an interim agreement reached last month that had temporarily halted a four-month conflict widely blamed for disrupting global energy supplies and increasing instability across the region.
Despite declaring the ceasefire finished, Trump indicated that diplomatic channels remain open. He said he plans to consult with special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, who have been involved in contacts with Iranian officials, while insisting that Tehran must take responsibility for moving negotiations forward.
Speaking earlier this week, Trump also suggested that the April 8 ceasefire had effectively collapsed after repeated violations and escalating military incidents. He sharply criticized Iran's leadership, accusing officials in Tehran of undermining efforts to restore stability.
The renewed conflict has raised concerns among international observers over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime trade routes. Recent attacks on commercial vessels have heightened fears of further disruption to global energy markets.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict continue. A delegation from Qatar, which has played a key mediating role in previous negotiations between Washington and Tehran, arrived in Iran on Friday for discussions aimed at reducing tensions and preserving channels for dialogue, according to Iranian media reports.
The latest developments come at a politically sensitive time for the Trump administration, with Republicans preparing for November's midterm elections amid concerns over rising fuel prices and growing public anxiety about another prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
As military operations continue alongside diplomatic contacts, the future of U.S.-Iran relations—and the stability of the wider region—remains highly uncertain.
