Andy Burnham Appointed as the United Kingdom’s 59th Prime Minister

Labour Party leader Andy Burnham has taken office as the United Kingdom’s new prime minister following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer. On Monday, Burnham was formally appointed as the United Kingdom’s 59th prime minister.

Earlier in the morning, Sir Keir Starmer visited Buckingham Palace and submitted his resignation to King Charles III. The King then invited Andy Burnham to form a government.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said, “The Right Honourable Andy Burnham MP accepted the King’s invitation and shook hands with him after being appointed Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”

In his first speech as prime minister, Burnham pledged to reduce the cost of living for people across the country. He said that serving the people would remain at the centre of every action taken by his government.

He also identified strengthening housing support for homeless people as one of the early priorities of his new government.

In addition, the new prime minister said he plans to announce a 10-year national plan for Britain by the end of this year. The plan is expected to set out the country’s long-term economic and social priorities.

Andy Burnham’s appointment following Starmer’s resignation marks the beginning of a new chapter in British politics. One of the biggest challenges facing the new government will be tackling the cost-of-living crisis, the housing shortage and long-term economic pressures.
