Abdul El-Sayed Makes History as the First Muslim Elected to the US Senate, Opening a New Chapter in American Politics

Detroit, Michigan, United States | November 4, 2026 | The Global Journal

Democratic physician and progressive politician Abdul El-Sayed has made history in American politics. He defeated Republican candidate and former Congressman Mike Rogers in Michigan’s crucial Senate election, becoming the first Muslim ever elected to the United States Senate. His victory is also significant for the Democratic Party, which regained control of the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. The Associated Press (AP) confirmed El-Sayed’s victory.

Early Wednesday morning (November 4), El-Sayed declared victory before supporters at the Michigan Democratic Party headquarters in Detroit. In his speech, he said that over the past year and a half, while campaigning across Michigan—from major cities to small communities—voters had welcomed him into their homes, churches and synagogues. He added that the support of ordinary people had given him strength during difficult times.

Controversy Over Identity and Faith, Attacks by Trump

Throughout the election campaign, El-Sayed faced various attacks targeting his name, religious identity and political positions. President Donald Trump described him as a “jihadist” and a “communist.” Trump also mocked him by suggesting that he would have to pass through a metal detector when entering the Senate. He further alleged that El-Sayed had links to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, although no public evidence was presented to substantiate the allegation.

Responding to these attacks, El-Sayed said his critics had tried to create divisions rather than address the real concerns of ordinary Americans, including high fuel prices and the rising cost of essential goods. In his victory speech, he said, “They want an America where there is not room for everyone. But we believe America is big enough for all of us.”

Healthcare and Foreign Policy at the Centre of His Campaign

El-Sayed, the former director of the Wayne County Health Department in Michigan, campaigned in favour of the “Medicare for All” programme to ensure universal access to healthcare. He also called for reducing the influence of corporate money in politics, addressing the rising cost of living and ending US military assistance to Israel.

In his victory speech, he said taxpayers’ money should be spent on improving schools, healthcare and infrastructure rather than funding wars and human rights violations. His strong criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza also became a significant issue during the election campaign.

Mike Rogers’ Political Positions and the Election Contest

El-Sayed’s opponent, Mike Rogers, was a former Congressman, former FBI official and close ally of Trump. Rogers had also contested the 2024 Senate election, when he narrowly lost to Democratic candidate Elissa Slotkin by just 0.3 percentage points.

This time, both candidates contested the seat held by outgoing Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who had served since 2015. Following Peters’ announcement that he would not seek another term, retaining the seat became particularly important for the Democrats. El-Sayed’s victory therefore carried considerable significance for the party.

Although Rogers initially supported Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and the idea of war with Iran, he called towards the end of the campaign for an end to the US-Canada trade dispute and a swift resolution to the conflict with Iran. He had previously opposed the Affordable Care Act and supported the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

Heavy Campaign Spending and a Test for Progressive Politics

El-Sayed’s victory was more than a contest for a single Senate seat. The election also became an important test of the appeal of progressive politics in a politically competitive state like Michigan.

El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination after defeating the party establishment’s preferred candidate, Haley Stevens, in the primary election. According to reports, the United Democracy Project, an affiliate of the pro-Israel lobbying organisation American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), spent nearly $30 million in an effort to defeat El-Sayed in the Democratic primary. According to advertising-monitoring organisation AdImpact, the two parties had collectively spent more than $220 million on advertisements in the general election by mid-October.

A Fox News poll conducted in August found that 54 percent of Michigan voters considered El-Sayed’s political positions too extreme. The same poll found that 51 percent of voters considered Rogers too close to Trump. Ultimately, El-Sayed emerged victorious in this highly contested and expensive election.

His victory marks a historic development for Muslim representation in the United States Senate. By retaining Michigan’s Senate seat, the Democrats have also further strengthened their Senate majority. However, as a newly elected senator, El-Sayed will face the challenge of navigating the legislative process and securing political compromises to fulfil his campaign promises.
