United States spent around $325 million behind the fall of the Awami League government in Bangladesh in August 2024 -The Paper Trail
The Global Journal | Dhaka, Bangladesh
An investigative report published by the US media outlet CSB News USA claims that the United States spent around $325 million (32.5 crore USD) behind the fall of the Awami League government in Bangladesh in August 2024.
The report titled “The Paper Trail: How Washington Spent Over $325 Million Dismantling Bangladesh’s Elected Government” states that this information was derived from an analysis of various US grant databases, congressional testimonies, and declassified documents.
It further claims that in the months leading up to the political change in 2024, there was a significant increase in financial flows into Bangladesh through NGOs, civil society organizations, and digital platforms. These funds were allegedly distributed under the guise of digital campaigns, organizational capacity building, and strengthening local networks.
According to CSB News, the incident should not be viewed merely as a “spontaneous mass movement,” but rather as part of a long-term, planned, and funded process. The report also suggests that this funding may have been linked to efforts to destabilize the then elected government.
It is worth noting that on August 5, 2024, following a student-led mass uprising, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and sought refuge in India. Later, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus.
Following the publication of this report, it has sparked widespread international discussion. However, neither the United States nor Bangladesh’s interim government has yet issued any official response.
According to analysts, if the claims and data presented in the report are proven true, it could trigger a major new debate regarding US foreign policy and influence in South Asia.
