At Least 34 Students and One Teacher Killed in School Roof Collapse in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Province Gripped by Mourning
Peshawar, Pakistan | October 16, 2026 | The Global Journal
At least 34 students and one teacher were killed after the roof of a classroom collapsed at a school in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Most of the students who died were aged 13 or younger. The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief across the province, prompting authorities to order inspections of school buildings to ensure the safety of educational institutions.
The roof collapse occurred on Thursday at Al-Khair School. On Friday, authorities launched an initiative to assess the structural safety of school buildings. According to the Associated Press (AP), the provincial education department has been given three days to submit its findings.
School Building Safety Inspections Ordered
The provincial administration has been instructed to inspect school buildings and submit reports on their condition. However, reports differ on whether the inspections will cover both public and private educational institutions or be limited to private schools.
Following the inspections, school buildings are expected to be classified into three categories: safe, requiring repairs or improvements, and potentially hazardous. Inspectors will examine roofs, ceilings, walls, staircases and other key structural components.

School Owner Arrested as Questions Emerge Over Building’s Structural Condition
Police have arrested Mohammad Khan, the owner of Al-Khair School, following the incident.
Peshawar police chief Saeed Ahmed said the school building was structurally weak. According to him, the school owner told police that recent rainfall had further weakened the building’s structure.
However, the building’s actual condition, the precise cause of the collapse and whether negligence contributed to the tragedy will need to be established through an investigation.
Families Allege They Had Reported Roof Leaks, Demand Justice
Families of the deceased students have called for a thorough investigation and justice for those responsible. Some relatives alleged that they had previously informed the school owner that rainwater was repeatedly leaking through the classroom roof.
On Friday, dozens of grieving people gathered outside the school to remember the victims. For the families, the tragedy represents not only the devastating loss of loved ones but also renewed concerns about the safety of educational institutions.
Renewed Concerns Over Building Construction Standards in Pakistan
Concerns over construction standards and the use of substandard building materials have persisted in Pakistan for years. The latest school tragedy has once again highlighted the need for regular inspections of educational infrastructure and proper enforcement of safety regulations.
In June, a roof collapse at a private tutoring centre in the eastern city of Lahore killed 14 people. A series of such incidents has intensified calls for stronger oversight of building construction and maintenance.
The deadly incident at the Peshawar school marks a deeply tragic chapter for Pakistan’s education sector. Identifying hazardous buildings, ensuring necessary repairs and investigating allegations of negligence are now critical challenges for the authorities as they seek to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
