A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering former British government minister and Reform UK politician Ann Widdecombe, after the 78-year-old was found dead with serious injuries at her home in southwest England.
According to Devon and Cornwall Police, officers were called to Widdecombe's residence near Newton Abbot, Devon, shortly after midday on Thursday. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and forensic examinations remain ongoing.
Police confirmed that a 26-year-old white British man was arrested in Newton Abbot, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Widdecombe's home. Investigators said there is currently no evidence to suggest the killing was linked to terrorism or politically motivated.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said detectives are treating the incident as a murder investigation while continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to Widdecombe, praising her long career in public service.
"Ann's dedication during her many years of public service will be remembered," Starmer said.
Widdecombe was one of Britain's most recognizable conservative politicians. She served as a junior minister under former Prime Minister John Major between 1992 and 1997 before later becoming a prominent advocate on immigration and justice issues for Reform UK.
Known for her outspoken and socially conservative views, Widdecombe frequently opposed abortion, same-sex relationship reforms, and other liberal social policies. She was also a strong supporter of Brexit and later joined Nigel Farage's Brexit Party, serving as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2020.
Following her retirement from Parliament, Widdecombe became widely known to television audiences after appearing on the BBC dance competition Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where she gained popularity despite receiving criticism from judges for her performances.
Political figures from across the United Kingdom paid tribute following news of her death.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described Widdecombe as someone who "played a decisive role in getting Brexit over the line," while former Prime Minister Boris Johnson called her "a heroic Brexiteer and a remarkable public speaker."
The investigation into Widdecombe's death remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses.
