Western countries will face Russian retaliation if they supply nuclear weapons to Ukraine – Moscow Security Council Chief Medvedev

Moscow, Russia | 25 February 2026 | The Global Journal

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Head of Moscow’s Security Council and former President of Russia, has warned that if Western countries supply nuclear weapons to Ukraine, Russia will be forced to respond.

Medvedev stated, “If the UK and France provide Ukraine with nuclear warheads, Russia will have to use any type of weapon, including non-strategic nuclear weapons, against targets that pose a threat to our country. If necessary, countries that become complicit in a nuclear conflict with Russia will also be targeted.”

He further added that the transfer of nuclear technology to Ukraine “radically changes the situation” and constitutes “a direct transfer of nuclear weapons to a country engaged in conflict.”

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted, “Such plans pose a threat to the entire nuclear non-proliferation regime, especially in the context of the ongoing heated conflict in Europe. This is a blatant violation of all norms, international law, and relevant regulations.”

The statements from Medvedev and Peskov make it clear that Russia is prepared to take strong action against Ukraine and the Western countries involved if nuclear weapons are supplied.

On Tuesday, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) accused the UK and France of planning to provide nuclear weapons to Ukraine, a move that could strengthen Kyiv’s position in peace talks.
