Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Is Healthy and Carrying Out His Duties, Diplomat Says, Claims Seven-Hour Meeting with President Pezeshkian Last Week

Tehran, Iran | October 23, 2026 | The Global Journal

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is in good health and continuing to perform his official duties as usual, according to a senior Iranian diplomat. The diplomat claims that Mojtaba held an important seven-hour meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian last week. However, he reportedly remains out of public view for security reasons.

Abdul Majid Hakeem Elahi, Iran’s representative to the supreme leader and a senior diplomat, made these remarks in an interview with Indian media outlet NDTV. According to Elahi, although Mojtaba has not appeared publicly, he remains involved in key decision-making and government affairs.

Absent from Public View Since the Airstrikes

Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly not appeared in public since being injured in US and Israeli airstrikes approximately eight months ago. His father, former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the same attacks. Mojtaba assumed the position of supreme leader following his father’s death.

Since then, his communications have largely been limited to written statements. His prolonged absence has raised questions about his physical condition, security and direct involvement in governing Iran. Speculation intensified when he was not seen publicly at his father’s funeral in July.

Diplomat Claims Seven-Hour Meeting

Speaking to NDTV, Abdul Majid Hakeem Elahi said Mojtaba Khamenei was physically well and continuing to perform his duties. He claimed that the supreme leader held a seven-hour meeting with President Pezeshkian last week.

Elahi also said that Iran’s parliamentary speaker had reported holding a lengthy meeting with Mojtaba. According to the diplomat, several people known to him had also met the supreme leader and confirmed that he was in good health.

Elahi rejected claims that Mojtaba had been absent from his father’s funeral. He said he was in Iran at the time and had met Mojtaba’s two brothers. He further claimed that Mojtaba was also present.

The diplomat additionally alleged that Mojtaba sometimes goes out at night and has participated in public demonstrations and gatherings in Iran. However, it remains unclear whether these claims have been independently verified.

Security Concerns Cited as Reason for Staying Out of Public View

According to Iranian officials, Mojtaba Khamenei is staying out of public view because of security concerns. Some sources have claimed that he sustained serious facial injuries in the airstrikes. Reports have also suggested that, during his recovery, a substantial portion of routine administrative responsibilities was delegated to senior officials.

Officials have reportedly said that Mojtaba continues to meet important figures, receive briefings on state affairs and make key decisions. Before the war began, he was also known for preferring to operate behind the scenes as a close aide to his father.

On July 21, President Masoud Pezeshkian said that communication with the supreme leader was increasing. However, in early August, he reportedly said that contacting Mojtaba had become difficult.

According to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian and Mojtaba held a meeting lasting several hours in May. It was among the first publicly reported meetings between them after Mojtaba assumed the position of supreme leader. Another meeting reportedly took place in late July, during which military developments and economic issues were discussed.

United States Questions Iran’s Leadership Structure

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has questioned Iran’s leadership and decision-making structure. Earlier this month, he said it was unclear who was directing Iran’s war effort. He claimed that many figures from both the country’s top leadership and the second tier of leadership had been killed.

US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington is holding discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. However, he questioned the extent of their actual authority within Iran’s power structure.

Vance said the way decisions are made in Iran remains unclear. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has rejected Washington’s assertions, maintaining that US officials know the identities of their Iranian counterparts and understand the country’s decision-making process.

Questions Remain Over Transparency in Iran’s Leadership

Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership, security situation and economy continues. Mojtaba Khamenei’s prolonged absence from public view has sustained questions about his physical condition and his direct role in governing the country.

According to Abdul Majid Hakeem Elahi, Mojtaba is healthy and continuing to carry out important responsibilities. However, independently verified information about his health, recent meetings and day-to-day activities remains limited. International attention therefore continues to focus on the actual circumstances surrounding Iran’s supreme leader.
