Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Comments on Iran’s Possible Involvement in Attack on Dubai–Israel Flight

TEL AVIV, Israel | October 1, 2026 | The Global Journal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said it is too early to determine whether Iran was involved in the incident aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, in which one pilot was stabbed and an attempt was allegedly made to take control of the aircraft.

When asked during an interview on Fox News’ Fox & Friends whether there were any indications of Iranian involvement in the incident, Netanyahu said, “It’s too early to say.” He added that the alleged attacker is currently being investigated in Saudi Arabia and could later be transferred to the United Arab Emirates.

The incident occurred Wednesday aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073. After departing Dubai for Tel Aviv, one pilot allegedly stabbed the other in the cockpit, according to Israeli officials. The aircraft rapidly lost altitude during the incident. Passengers and crew members subsequently managed to overpower the alleged attacker, and the aircraft landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu and Modi Praise Injured Indian Pilot as a ‘Hero’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have praised Indian Captain Smit Machchhar for his bravery during the incident.

According to Netanyahu, Machchhar was able to open the cockpit door despite being seriously injured. This enabled passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and help overpower the alleged attacker.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar’s courage, saying that despite being seriously injured, he demonstrated immense courage and determination to protect the lives of others. Machchhar is reported to be in stable condition.

Investigation Underway Into Alleged Attacker’s Motive

The exact motive behind the incident has not yet been officially established. Netanyahu separately claimed that the alleged co-pilot had undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination.” However, the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining the attacker’s motive and any possible links to an organisation or country.

The UAE’s Attorney General has also ordered an investigation into the circumstances and motive behind the incident. The investigation will also examine whether there was any connection to terrorist activity or prior planning.

According to a preliminary assessment by Israeli security officials, the alleged attacker may have acted alone. However, no final conclusions have been reached regarding his motive or any possible connections while the investigation remains ongoing.

Passengers Helped Overpower the Attacker

During the incident, several passengers, including Yaniv Hayun, intervened to help restrain the alleged attacker. Hayun said he put the attacker in a chokehold while other passengers helped restrain him.

The other pilots on board subsequently took control of the aircraft and landed it safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Reports said all 174 passengers aboard the aircraft were safe.

Following the incident, Israeli authorities have said they plan to strengthen security checks for pilots operating flights to the country. Flydubai has also announced the suspension of its flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.

So far, no confirmed evidence of Iranian involvement has been made public. Therefore, Netanyahu’s comments on the matter remain an unresolved issue pending the outcome of the investigation.
