Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated American Ben Shelton in four sets to win the US Open men’s singles title for the first time. Zverev overcame Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in Sunday’s final at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The victory gave Zverev his second Grand Slam title of the 2026 season, following his breakthrough French Open triumph earlier this year. He also avenged his painful defeat in the 2020 US Open final, when he surrendered a two-set lead against Austria’s Dominic Thiem.

Zverev takes control from the start

Playing as the top seed, Zverev made a strong start and took advantage of Shelton’s early errors to win the opening set 6-3.

Zverev became emotional after the victory as he thanked his family and coaching team for their support.

He also paid special tribute to his mother, Irina, who supported him after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during childhood. Zverev said her belief that the illness would not define his future played an important role in his journey to the top of tennis.

Zverev also praised Shelton after the match, expressing confidence that the 23-year-old American will eventually win the US Open.
