Next year, India and Russia will mark 80 years of diplomatic relations. Highlighting the longstanding bilateral ties, Dr. Elena Remizova, Director of the Russian House, said that amid the current turbulent international situation, people-to-people connections, cultural exchanges, education and business cooperation between India and Russia should be strengthened further alongside cooperation among BRICS members.

Remizova made the remarks on India-Russia relations following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Her comments were made in an interview with Firstpost.

‘We must stay together in turbulent times’

According to Dr. Remizova, unity and cooperation among BRICS countries have become increasingly important amid the current global situation.

She said that alongside economic relations, it is necessary to strengthen people-to-people connections, cultural ties, education, science, and the exchange of experiences, ideas and people.

She also highlighted the BRICS ‘Civil Forum’. According to her, the platform brings together NGOs and public organisations to strengthen people-to-people ties. She also stressed the importance of increasing cooperation among young people.

The Director of the Russian House said that interest among Indian youth in visiting Russia is growing. The Russian House also runs special programmes for Indian young people interested in visiting the country. She noted that Russian youth are similarly interested in India.

Rupee-Ruble trade and investment

Remizova also expressed satisfaction with the participation of Russian and Indian businesses at the INNOPROM exhibition held at Bharat Mandapam on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

She said Russian companies have shown significant interest in coming to India, exhibiting their products and establishing direct contacts with Indian businesses. At the same time, she said Indian companies are also keen to do business with Russia.

Remizova specifically highlighted transactions in national currencies. According to her, the rupee-ruble payment mechanism offers an opportunity to facilitate business transactions between the two countries.

She said Russian businesses are interested in investing in India, while Indian businesses are also welcome to invest in Russia. She added that although there are already several successful examples of bilateral business cooperation, there is still considerable scope for further expansion.

80 years of diplomatic relations

With India and Russia set to mark the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027, Dr. Remizova also highlighted the importance of the two countries’ cultural ties.

She recalled major cultural festivals held in India and the then Soviet Union in 1986 and 1987. According to her, those events played an important role in strengthening cultural exchanges between the peoples of the two countries.

She said maintaining the continuity of cultural exchanges remains important today. According to her, the two countries also have an intergovernmental arrangement for exchanges involving cultural and musical groups.

She emphasised efforts to bring more Russian cultural groups to India to showcase dances, music, songs and regional traditions from different parts of Russia, while also deepening Russian audiences’ understanding of Indian culture.

India’s role in a multipolar world

Speaking about the roles of India and Russia in the international system, Dr. Remizova described India as a ‘civilisational state’.

She said India’s long history and civilisational heritage are important elements of its international identity. In her view, India’s experience of preserving its traditions while moving forward with modernity is significant.

Referring to Indian art and culture, she said Indian artists are open to various forms of experimentation, while their work continues to be rooted in Indian heritage.

According to Remizova, India’s long historical and cultural tradition contributes to its role as an important power in the contemporary world.

Modi-Putin meeting and bilateral relations

During the Modi-Putin meeting on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, the two sides discussed ways to further deepen their longstanding relationship. Alongside political, economic and strategic ties, people-to-people connections are also emerging as an important area for the future of India-Russia relations.

Dr. Remizova’s remarks particularly highlighted the need to expand cooperation in areas including education, science, culture, youth exchanges and business investment, in addition to economic cooperation.

As India and Russia prepare to mark 80 years of diplomatic relations next year, discussions surrounding the relationship have also highlighted opportunities to further expand its multiple dimensions.
