Iran and Russia Are Tested and Strategic Partners in Their National and International Interests; Both Countries Desperately Need Each Other

Signs of deepening strategic ties between Iran and Russia have emerged following a recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The two leaders highlighted mutual cooperation and support during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
According to a statement released by the Kremlin, Putin expressed Russia’s “full solidarity” with the Iranian people. He also praised their courage and resilience in defending their national interests. Putin further asked Pezeshkian to convey his greetings and sincere support to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
Pezeshkian Calls Iran-Russia Relations Strategic
During the meeting, Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for Russia’s position toward Iran. According to the Kremlin’s account of the talks, he thanked Moscow for its stance during the war, conflicts and US sanctions.
Pezeshkian said that Iran-Russia relations are strategic in nature and extend beyond ordinary bilateral ties. In his view, cooperation between the two countries can play an important role in confronting unilateral pressure and sanctions.
Expert Sees Growing Mutual Dependence
Speaking to Fox News Digital, retired US Air Force General and former NATO commander Philip Breedlove said relations between Iran and Russia are growing closer and that both countries “desperately need each other.”
According to his analysis, both countries are facing economic and strategic pressures. He claimed that Iran’s missile-production capabilities could be important for Russia, while Iran has an interest in obtaining military technology, targeting support and intelligence assistance from Russia.
Breedlove also claimed that Russia is transferring various military capabilities and technologies to Iran. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
Importance of Russian Support at the United Nations
Jason Brodsky, policy director at the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), said Iran and Russia have maintained a long-standing partnership that is strategically important to both countries.
According to him, Russia views Iran as an important partner for exerting pressure against the United States. Iran, meanwhile, has increasingly relied on Russia in recent years for strengthening military capabilities, economic cooperation and political support in the international arena.
He also highlighted the importance of Russia’s position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council for Iran.
Impact of Iran-Russia Ties on the US-Iran Conflict
Breedlove said the ongoing US-Iran conflict has increasingly become a test of will. He argued that although the United States has gained significant military advantages in the air and at sea, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) may pursue a strategy focused on prolonging the conflict and surviving it.
In his analysis, continued threats to the Strait of Hormuz could increase maritime insurance costs and shipping expenses, potentially creating wider effects on the global economy.
Broader Geopolitical Message from Closer Iran-Russia Ties
Recent meetings and statements indicate that Moscow and Tehran’s relationship extends beyond conventional bilateral cooperation. The strategic importance of their ties is growing across regional security, resistance to Western sanctions, military and technological cooperation, and mutual diplomatic support.
At the same time, closer Iran-Russia cooperation could influence the broader geopolitical balance involving the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Some experts believe that deeper Iranian-Russian cooperation could make it more complicated for Western powers to manage strategic challenges in the region.
However, claims concerning military cooperation and the transfer of military technology require independent verification.
