Iran Focuses on Strengthening Ties with BRICS Countries, Including India, to Address Economic Crisis Amid Rising US Sanctions

Tehran, Iran | September 11, 2026 | The Global Journal

Amid growing economic pressure and sanctions from the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran is focusing on strengthening relations and cooperation with BRICS member states, including India, to address its economic crisis.

Ahead of the BRICS Summit, Iranian policy expert and Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Governance at Tehran Polytechnic University, Dr. Seyed Mohamad Sadegh Emamian, spoke to Firstpost about Tehran’s expectations, Iran’s economic resilience, and its relations with India.

Iran Shows Resilience Amid War and Economic Crisis

According to Emamian, the recent war and economic crisis have significantly affected Iran’s economy, but Iranian society and state institutions have demonstrated considerable resilience in dealing with the crisis.

He said military attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran have created a sense of unity among Iranians over protecting national security and sovereignty. Despite major shocks at the beginning of the war, including the killing of senior political figures and military commanders, Iran’s military and administrative systems have continued to function, he noted.

Emamian further said Iran’s public administration is not overly dependent on any particular individual and that the country’s state machinery has remained operational even during wartime.

Concerns Over the Impact of a Naval Blockade on the Oil Sector

Emamian warned that if a naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz continues, it could put significant pressure on Iran’s economy. In particular, he said Iran’s oil industry could be affected, while the wider energy sector across the Persian Gulf could also face serious consequences.

According to him, Iran’s economy has developed a degree of adaptability after facing Western sanctions and various unilateral economic measures for many years. However, he acknowledged that sanctions have caused significant damage to the Iranian economy and imposed substantial economic costs on ordinary people.

Iran’s Assessment of ‘Operation Economic Outcast’

Regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s announced “Operation Economic Outcast,” Emamian said Washington has already imposed various forms of economic pressure on Iran. In his view, a significant part of the new policy relies not only on economic measures but also on psychological and information warfare.

Referring to the “maximum pressure” policy introduced in 2018, he said there is a perception in Tehran that the United States has already used most of the major economic tools available to it for pressuring Iran.

Emamian also believes that the European Union joining a new U.S.-led economic initiative would have limited additional practical impact because Europe has already imposed significant economic measures against Iran. However, he said such a move could carry an important political message for Tehran.

BRICS as an Alternative Economic Platform

According to Emamian, multilateral platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) have become increasingly important to countries of the Global South.

He said these platforms could provide alternative avenues for cooperation outside the U.S.-dominated international system. The importance of platforms such as BRICS has increased particularly because of Washington’s unilateral trade policies, tariffs and economic pressure on Iran, he added.

However, he noted that BRICS also faces limitations in fully utilizing its potential. Some member states remain highly cautious, which has prevented the organization from fully realizing its potential as an alternative economic platform, he said.

From Iran’s perspective, Emamian said, BRICS and the SCO are not merely platforms for economic cooperation but also potential opportunities to build a supportive international network outside the U.S.-dominated system.

Iran’s Expectations from India

Emamian said Iran and India have a long-standing historical and civilizational relationship. However, he noted that some aspects of bilateral economic ties have weakened in recent years.

According to him, India’s imports of Iranian oil have declined significantly, while overall India-Iran trade has followed a similar trend. He also pointed to India’s close relationship with Israel as a source of concern among Iranian policymakers.

Nevertheless, Emamian said Tehran remains interested in further strengthening bilateral relations with India. In particular, Iran sees India’s presidency of BRICS as an opportunity to advance the broader interests of the Global South.

He expressed hope that under India’s leadership, BRICS would prioritize the values and common interests of the Global South and that New Delhi would play a role in strengthening multilateral cooperation from a relatively independent position.
