Iran May Launch a Direct Military Attack on US Territory, Former US Ambassador Joey Hood Warns

Amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran, former US Ambassador to Tunisia Joey Hood has warned that Iran could potentially launch a direct attack on US territory. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Hood cautioned that Tehran could decide to carry out a surprise attack against the United States within the next six weeks.
Hood’s remarks come at a time when military tensions between Washington and Tehran are becoming increasingly complex. Alongside military retaliation, the lack of diplomatic engagement between the two countries is further intensifying the confrontation.
Concerns Over the US Midterm Elections
According to former US diplomat Joey Hood, Iran’s long history of confrontation with Washington includes instances in which Tehran has managed to create politically embarrassing situations for US presidents.
He fears that Iran could take action around the time of the 2026 US midterm elections, potentially creating significant political repercussions within the United States.
However, while Hood’s remarks are being viewed as a potential risk assessment, there is currently no confirmed or official information that Iran is preparing to attack the US mainland. Therefore, the six-week timeframe should be regarded as an analytical warning rather than a confirmed prediction.
Risk of the Conflict Spreading Beyond the Middle East
US military bases and assets in the Middle East are already facing increased risks amid the ongoing confrontation. Reciprocal missile and drone attacks, along with strikes against military facilities, have raised concerns that the geographic scope of the conflict could expand further.
Experts warn that if Iran were to launch a direct attack against the US mainland beyond the Middle East, it could dramatically alter the nature of the current conflict. A retaliatory military response from Washington could also increase the risk of a much wider confrontation.
Such a development could have consequences not only for military security but also for global energy markets, international trade routes and the wider global economy.
Hood Sees a Possible Diplomatic Solution
Despite the military escalation, Joey Hood believes there is still room for a diplomatic solution. According to him, although the United States and Iran are currently not engaged in direct talks, communication between the two countries could be restored through third-party mediation.
He has called for a greater role for regional mediators, particularly urging the countries that signed the Mecca Agreement to become actively involved in efforts to resolve the crisis.
In his view, coordinated initiatives by regional countries could create a possible pathway for Washington and Tehran to return to the negotiating table.
Risk of a Regional Conflict Becoming a Global Crisis
The confrontation between the United States and Iran has already destabilized the security environment in the Middle East. If a direct attack on the US mainland were added to the conflict, it could place further pressure on NATO allies, regional partners and the
broader international security system.
Analysts say that under such circumstances, one of the most important ways to contain the conflict would be to reduce the cycle of military retaliation while re-establishing regional mediation and diplomatic channels.
