‘We Are Concerned About the Attack on Civilians at a Wedding in Iran’ — US Vice President JD Vance

The United States is investigating a recent airstrike on a wedding ceremony in Iran, US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday. He made the remarks during a White House press briefing as tensions continued to escalate in West Asia.
Asked about the strike, Vance said, “We’re investigating it because obviously we’re concerned. We want to know what happened.” He added that when the US military makes mistakes, it learns from them and seeks to improve its operations in the future.
According to Iranian officials, the strike on the wedding ceremony initially killed four people and injured around 70 others. Iranian state media later reported that a 22-year-old woman among the injured had died in hospital, bringing the reported death toll to five. These casualty figures could not be independently verified at the time.
Following the attack, the US military said it was aware of Iran’s reports but maintained that it had no intention of targeting civilians.
‘When We Make Mistakes, We Learn From Them’: Vance
During the White House briefing, Vance said that if mistakes were made during US military operations, they would be investigated and steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Drawing a contrast with Iran, Vance argued that the US military has mechanisms for reviewing mistakes and learning from them to improve its capabilities and operations.
His remarks came amid renewed questions over allegations of civilian casualties resulting from US strikes in Iran.
Vance Declines to Give Timeline for End of Conflict
Vance declined to provide a specific timeline for when the ongoing US-Israeli military confrontation involving Iran would end.
He also questioned whether the situation should be directly described as a “war.” According to Vance, major combat operations lasted roughly six weeks and, in the US assessment, weakened Iran’s defence production capabilities.
He acknowledged, however, that fighting had intensified again in some areas.
Vance Blames Iran Over Strait of Hormuz
Addressing the wider global impact of the conflict, Vance highlighted the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. He accused Iran of disrupting shipping through the vital international trade route.
Vance said maintaining the flow of commercial vessels and energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz was crucial to preventing a global energy crisis.
He also claimed that US military operations against Iran were helping create conditions for increased oil shipments through the strategic waterway.
Washington’s Position on Global Energy Markets
Vance further claimed that a new agreement involving the transfer of control over approximately 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves to the United States could help bring down global oil prices.
According to Vance, the impact of Iran’s actions affecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz on global energy markets has been gradually declining.
The broader impact of these claims, however, will depend on international energy-market data and assessments from relevant parties.
Vance Calls for Greater Support From Allies
During the briefing, Vance called on US allies to play a more active role in the ongoing situation.
He said the United States is working to protect commercial shipping in an effort to prevent a potential global energy crisis.
Vance attributed the avoidance of a major global energy crisis primarily to President Donald Trump’s leadership and the actions of the US military.
