At least 16 people, including five police officers, were killed in a deadly blast near a mosque in Kohat city of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during Friday prayers. At least 54 others were injured, according to local officials cited in various reports.

The blast occurred on Friday near a mosque in the Old Police Lines area of Kohat. Following the explosion, rescue operations were launched at the scene, while the injured were taken to Kohat’s District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. The hospital authorities declared an emergency.

Mosque and Police Lines Damaged in Blast

According to preliminary reports, the force of the explosion caused extensive damage to the exterior of the mosque and brought down a wall. Officials also said that a crater was formed at the site of the explosion.

According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief Zulfiqar Hameed, the blast occurred after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the Old Police Lines. He later said that another attacker detonated himself near the Special Branch building.

However, initial accounts of the attack have differed. Some reports identified an explosives-laden vehicle as the source of the main explosion, while subsequent statements from officials referred to a suicide bomber. Security operations and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Gunfight Between Police and Attackers

Following the blast, an exchange of fire began between police and armed attackers. Local officials said security had been tightened around the police lines and an operation had been launched against the attackers.

Pakistani authorities have suspected the involvement of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the attack. The Pakistani government uses the term “Fitna-ul-Khawarij” to refer to the TTP. However, there was no immediate confirmation that any group had formally claimed responsibility for the attack.

Violence Rising in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Kohat attack comes at a time of increased armed violence and security incidents in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. International reports have said that the TTP has intensified attacks targeting Pakistani security forces and civilians in recent years.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Kohat blast and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. The prime minister also directed authorities to expedite rescue and relief operations.

Kohat Has Faced Deadly Attacks Before

Kohat and surrounding areas have witnessed deadly attacks and explosions in the past. In 2010, a blast near the Kohat Police Lines killed at least 20 people and injured more than 90 others.

Following the latest attack, security forces have cordoned off the area and continued rescue efforts, while investigations into the nature of the attack and those responsible are underway.
