Iran Sees No Need for Talks with the United States, Has No Plans for a Meeting — Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Tehran, Iran | October 31, 2026 | The Global Journal

Iran has no plans to meet with US officials and sees no necessity for direct talks with Washington under the current circumstances, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said. However, diplomatic communication through intermediaries is continuing as efforts to ease tensions between the two countries remain underway.

In an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday (October 31), Araghchi described media reports and speculation about a possible meeting with US officials as assumptions. His remarks were also reported by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA.

Tehran Sees No Need for a Meeting with Washington

According to Araghchi, Iran currently sees no necessity to sit down for direct talks with the United States. He said Tehran’s conditions for negotiations are clear and that mediators are continuing consultations on those conditions.

He added that if the United States accepts Iran’s conditions, Tehran will then decide whether any negotiations should take place directly or indirectly through intermediaries.

Iran Has Reviewed Vance’s Message

Araghchi also confirmed that Iran had received a message from US Vice President JD Vance. According to the foreign minister, the message was carefully reviewed and discussed during a high-level meeting in Iran.

Araghchi said Tehran views Washington’s efforts to create an opportunity for dialogue and improve mutual understanding as a positive step.

However, he warned that if Washington’s intention behind sending the message was to create divisions within Iran, it would amount to another mistake by the United States.

Diplomatic Discussions Continue Through Mediators

Despite the absence of plans for direct talks with Washington, diplomatic communication through intermediaries has not stopped, Araghchi said. Discussions involving various parties are continuing over Iran’s conditions.

He revealed that an Iranian delegation had travelled to Doha, the capital of Qatar. Iran’s deputy foreign minister is also continuing consultations with relevant parties in Qatar.

Prospects for Dialogue Depend on Iran’s Conditions

Araghchi’s remarks highlight Tehran’s position: while it considers US efforts to open a channel for dialogue a positive development, it continues to insist that its conditions must be addressed before negotiations can proceed.

However, the full details of Iran’s conditions, Washington’s response and the extent of progress made through mediators have not been publicly disclosed.

Diplomatic efforts remain important in preventing a renewed military confrontation between Iran and the United States. Whether formal negotiations will begin will depend on Iran’s conditions, Washington’s position and the continued efforts of the mediators.
