Trump’s Republican Party Faces Possible Defeat in November 3 Midterm Elections as His Approval Rating Falls to 33 Percent
Washington, United States | November 1, 2026 | The Global Journal
The United States is set to hold its crucial midterm elections on November 3. With just two days remaining before the vote, President Donald Trump and his Republican Party are facing growing political pressure. Recent opinion polls indicate that Trump's approval rating remains at a low level, raising concerns among Republicans about their ability to retain control of both chambers of Congress.
A CNN poll published on October 21 showed Trump's approval rating falling to 32 percent, marking the lowest level of his presidency in that survey. Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on October 26 put his approval rating at 32 percent. The same polling organisation had recorded an approval rating of 31 percent on October 19.
Polls Suggest Democrats Hold an Advantage in Congressional Race
According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, 47 percent of registered voters said they would vote for Democratic candidates in the congressional elections, compared with 36 percent who favoured Republicans. Among likely voters, Democrats led with 53 percent support, while Republicans received 44 percent.
A CNN poll published on October 21 also showed Democrats holding a 10-percentage-point lead over Republicans when voters were asked which party's candidate they would support in their congressional district. These figures point to a challenging political landscape for the Republican Party.
Republicans are currently fighting to retain their majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If the polling trend continues, Democrats could regain control of the House. The Senate race remains competitive, however, with its outcome likely to depend on closely contested state-level races.

Cost of Living and Fuel Prices Emerge as Major Election Issues
Opinion polls indicate that dissatisfaction with the cost of living and the broader economic situation is among the main sources of voter frustration. Inflation, rising prices of essential goods and high fuel costs, including petrol, have become major concerns for American households.
In the October 26 Reuters/Ipsos poll, 73 percent of respondents said the cost of living in the country was heading in the wrong direction. The same survey found that 37 percent of voters trusted Democrats more to manage the economy, compared with 33 percent who favoured Republicans.
Trump Steps Up Campaigning in Final Days
In an effort to boost support for Republican candidates ahead of the election, President Trump has been campaigning across several states. His personal popularity and voters' perceptions of his economic policies could play an important role in determining the outcome for Republican candidates.
Midterm elections in the United States are traditionally a difficult test for the party holding the presidency. If Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives or the Senate, the Trump administration could face significant political obstacles in passing legislation and advancing its policy agenda during the remainder of his term.
However, opinion polls offer only an indication of the possible electoral outcome and do not determine the final result. The November 3 vote and state-by-state contests will ultimately decide which party controls Congress.
