‘They Are Trying to Kill My Father’—Imran Khan’s Son Raises Alarm Over Former Pakistani Prime Minister’s Safety in Prison

Islamabad, Pakistan | October 30, 2026 | The Global Journal

Sulaiman Khan, the son of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has warned that his father’s life is at risk. He has alleged that Imran Khan is being mistreated in prison and that attempts are being made to kill him. Sulaiman has held Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, responsible for the situation.

British newspaper The Independent reported the allegations in an article published on Thursday (October 29). Sulaiman claims that neither family members nor Imran Khan’s lawyers have been able to communicate with him since August. The lack of contact has heightened the family’s concerns about his health and safety.

‘They Are Trying to Kill My Father’

In a statement shared on social media, Sulaiman Khan said his father had clearly stated in August that he was being mistreated in prison. Imran had also expressed fears that Pakistan’s ruling establishment was pushing him towards a fate similar to that of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

According to Sulaiman, no one has seen or heard from his father since then.

He further claimed that his father remains one of Pakistan’s most popular political leaders and that his political opponents fear his influence. Sulaiman warned that there should be no confusion about who would be responsible if the worst were to happen to his father.

Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi died during a court hearing in 2019. Imran Khan had previously expressed fears that he could face a similar fate.

However, the claim that an attempt is being made to kill Imran Khan remains an allegation by his son. The report did not present independently verified evidence supporting it.

Concerns Over Medical Treatment and Family Visits

Sulaiman has also raised concerns about his father’s medical care and access to family members. He alleged that Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, is disregarding directions issued by the Supreme Court.

According to Sulaiman, in August the Supreme Court ordered that Imran Khan be taken to the private Shifa International Hospital for medical examinations and treatment. The court also reportedly directed that regular family visits and access to his lawyers be ensured.

The Pakistani government, however, has denied allegations of mistreatment and solitary confinement.

In a written response to the Associated Press (AP) in August, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information said Imran Khan was not being held under any executive order issued by the government. Instead, it described him as a convicted prisoner serving sentences imposed through judicial proceedings.

Imran Khan Held at Adiala Jail

The 74-year-old former prime minister is currently being held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. He has remained in prison following convictions in corruption and bribery-related cases. The report also states that more than 100 cases have been filed against him.

Imran Khan has consistently denied the allegations, describing the cases as politically motivated and claiming that they are intended to keep him out of politics.

Imran’s Sisters Detained Amid Family’s Concerns

Sulaiman has alleged that members of Imran Khan’s family have also faced pressure while campaigning for his release.

Sulaiman and his brother, Qasim Khan, have reportedly been advised against travelling to Pakistan to campaign for their father’s release.

In September, Imran Khan’s three sisters—Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi—were detained. They were reportedly taken into custody ahead of planned protests under Punjab province’s public order legislation. The report does not state that they were convicted of any offence.

On Monday, provincial government officials announced that their detention orders had been extended by another 30 days.

Protests Continue Demanding Imran Khan’s Release

Protests demanding Imran Khan’s release have continued in several parts of Pakistan. Thousands of PTI supporters reportedly attended a rally earlier this month, with demonstrators also undertaking a long march towards Islamabad.

Their key demands include Imran Khan’s release, greater access for family members and lawyers, and arrangements for treatment by doctors of his own choice.

Emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sparks Political Dispute

Meanwhile, on October 11, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari reportedly declared an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and suspended the PTI-led provincial government’s authority.

The federal government cited the activities of Islamist militant groups in the province, which borders Afghanistan, as the reason for the emergency declaration.

The PTI criticised the move, describing it as an attempted coup under the cover of an emergency. The party alleged that the measure was intended to weaken the ongoing movement demanding Imran Khan’s release.

Growing Political Concern Over Imran Khan’s Safety

The dispute over Imran Khan’s health, access to his family and medical treatment in prison has added another dimension to Pakistan’s ongoing political crisis. His son’s warning about a possible threat to his life and allegations against the army chief have further intensified the controversy.

However, Sulaiman Khan’s allegations must be considered alongside the Pakistani government’s response and independently verified information about the implementation of the court’s directions. Attention is now focused on what steps the authorities will take to ensure Imran Khan’s safety, medical care and access to his family.
