We May Have Gone Too Far in Targeting Iran’s Top Leaders During the War,” Says US President Donald Trump

Ohio, United States | October 13, 2026 | The Global Journal

US President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States may have gone too far in targeting Iran’s top leadership, raising questions about Washington’s ability to identify whom to engage in diplomatic negotiations with Tehran.

According to Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera, Trump made the remarks during an election rally in Ohio as the United States prepares for the November midterm elections. “We may have gone too far in targeting the leadership (of Iran), because now we don’t even know who we should be talking to,” Trump said.

He also claimed that no one wants to become Iran’s president because of the risks involved. His remarks highlighted concerns about Iran’s leadership and decision-making structure amid the ongoing conflict.

Trump’s Claims About Iran’s Military Capabilities

During the rally, Trump described Iran as the “leading state sponsor of terrorism” and reiterated that the United States would never allow Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.

He also claimed that US military operations had completely destroyed Iran’s air force and navy. According to Trump, all 159 of Iran’s naval vessels had been destroyed.

These statements reflect Trump’s account of the military campaign. The full extent of the damage and the claims about Iran’s military capabilities require separate independent verification.

Washington’s Concerns Over Iran’s Decision-Making Process

US Vice President JD Vance previously raised concerns about uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership and decision-making process in an interview with Reuters.

In the interview published on October 6, Vance said that any effective agreement with Iran would require Tehran to significantly reduce its uranium-enrichment capabilities. He also indicated that a future promise to limit its nuclear programme would not be sufficient on its own.

Washington has maintained that Iran must take concrete steps to demonstrate that it will not develop nuclear weapons. Tehran, meanwhile, has defended its uranium-enrichment activities and disagreed with US demands.

Diplomatic Settlement Remains Uncertain

Trump and Vance’s recent remarks underscore Washington’s concerns about the prospects for a possible agreement with Iran. While the United States is pressing for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the administration has also raised questions about the process through which decisions are made in Tehran.

Iran, however, has indicated that Washington understands its decision-making structure and has argued that contradictory US statements and positions are contributing to difficulties in negotiations.

The prospects for an agreement will depend on progress concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, security concerns and the conditions both sides are prepared to accept in any potential negotiations.

Trump’s latest comments have renewed debate over the US strategy of targeting Iran’s leadership and the challenges of pursuing diplomacy amid an ongoing conflict.
