New Zealand and India Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership During Prime Minister Modi's Historic Visit

The Global Journal | Auckland, New Zealand | July 11, 2026

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon have agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation between the two Indo-Pacific nations.

The agreement was announced on Saturday following high-level talks in Auckland during Modi's first official visit to New Zealand by an Indian prime minister in four decades.

In a joint statement, the two leaders said the upgraded partnership reflects their nations' "shared democratic values, deep people-to-people ties, and common interests in maintaining a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific."

Modi arrived in New Zealand on Friday after concluding visits to Indonesia and Australia, where he signed a series of bilateral agreements aimed at expanding India's regional engagement. During his visit to Auckland, he is also scheduled to address thousands of members of the Indian diaspora at a public event.

Alongside the diplomatic upgrade, New Delhi and Wellington signed a new defence cooperation arrangement, pledging closer collaboration on maritime security, defence exchanges, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The strengthened partnership comes as both countries seek to deepen cooperation amid evolving geopolitical dynamics across the Asia-Pacific region.

However, Modi's visit also takes place against a backdrop of domestic debate within New Zealand over immigration. Rising migration from India has become a politically sensitive issue, with reports of increasing racial abuse targeting members of the Indian community and calls from some political parties for tighter immigration controls.

According to New Zealand's 2023 Census, approximately 292,000 people—about 5.5% of the country's 5.3 million population—identified as being of Indian ethnicity, making the Indian community one of the nation's largest and fastest-growing ethnic groups.

Despite these domestic challenges, leaders from both countries emphasized their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, security, education, technology, and people-to-people exchanges under the newly established Strategic Partnership.
