Nepal Thanks to Indian Prime Minister Modi for Continued Support Amid Crisis,Finance Minister Wagle Praises India’s Assistance

Nepal has expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s continued support as the country confronts a humanitarian crisis caused by devastating floods and landslides. Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle described India’s assistance as “exceptionally generous.”
Speaking to PTI Videos, Wagle said New Delhi had indicated that it would provide significant assistance for Nepal’s reconstruction in addition to its support for emergency rescue and relief operations.
A glacial collapse and a massive ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal–Tibet border sent powerful torrents of water, mud and debris through several communities in central Nepal. Homes, vehicles, roads and bridges were damaged, while several hydropower projects were also affected.
According to the latest information, more than 2,400 people remain missing, while around 2,500 people have been evacuated to safety. Rescue teams are continuing to operate under difficult conditions as intermittent rainfall persists in affected areas.
India Has Sent 57.6 Tonnes of Relief Supplies
Since Wednesday, India has dispatched 57.6 tonnes of relief materials to flood-affected areas of Nepal.
Following a request from Kathmandu, an 11-member Indian team comprising medical personnel and tunnel-rescue experts also arrived in Nepal to assist local authorities.
Wagle said Indian assistance has been particularly important for supporting rescue operations and delivering emergency supplies to remote and isolated areas.
Rescue Remains the Immediate Priority
Wagle said Nepal is responding to the crisis in several phases, with the immediate priority being the rescue of people who remain stranded or trapped, particularly workers at hydropower facilities.
He said the Nepal Army has already airlifted 1,930 people to safety.
Efforts are also underway to transport relief supplies by helicopter to areas including Dhunche, Rasuwa and Syaphru Besi, which have been cut off after roads were damaged.
Recovery and Reconstruction Next
According to Wagle, once the emergency rescue phase is completed, Nepal will move toward early recovery and rehabilitation.
Plans include establishing temporary shelters and introducing cash-for-work programmes for affected communities. The next major challenge will be the long-term reconstruction of destroyed roads, bridges, homes and other critical infrastructure.
More Than 11,000 Security Personnel Mobilized
More than 11,000 security personnel, including over 5,000 Nepal Army troops, have been mobilized for search and rescue operations across the country.
Difficult mountainous terrain, damaged transport infrastructure and the risk of further floods or landslides continue to complicate rescue efforts.
Wagle Praises India and Modi
Praising India’s support, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle said, “The Government of India and Prime Minister Modi have been exceptionally generous.”
He recalled India’s assistance during Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake, saying the support provided at that time was also particularly noteworthy.
Wagle said New Delhi had again sent specialized relief supplies following the recent floods and indicated that India was prepared to provide “very generous assistance for reconstruction.”
He added that Nepal was also receiving support from its other neighboring countries.
As rescue operations continue, Nepal’s immediate priorities remain finding missing people, delivering food and medical assistance to affected communities, and restoring damaged infrastructure.
