Former Star Cricketers Raise Concerns Over Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Health, Call for His Release

Former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health has become a growing concern, with former star cricketers Javed Miandad and Moin Khan calling for proper medical treatment and his release.

Imran Khan and Javed Miandad were two of Pakistan cricket’s most prominent figures during the 1980s and 1990s. The two were long-time teammates and played important roles in one of the most successful eras in Pakistan cricket.

Amid renewed concerns over Imran’s health, Miandad made an emotional appeal to the Pakistani government during an interview on the Narratives podcast recorded last week. He urged the authorities to resolve their differences with Imran and said he was willing to help in any way possible.

Miandad said, “I pray that what is happening to him gets resolved, because he does not deserve this. What is being done to him is not right. It is unnecessary. He has a family too.”

Reflecting on Imran’s prolonged imprisonment, Miandad said he often thinks about how his former teammate is coping in prison and what he may be thinking. He also recalled their close friendship and rejected the idea that there had been a bitter rivalry between them.

Moin Khan Calls for Medical Care and Rights

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper and captain Moin Khan also expressed concern over Imran’s condition.

In a video message posted on social media, Moin appealed to the Pakistani government to ensure Imran receives proper medical treatment and his fundamental rights as a former prime minister and citizen.

He said, “Imran Khan is very unwell. I appeal to the government of Pakistan that Imran be granted his rights as a former prime minister and citizen of Pakistan with regard to his treatment.”

Moin also urged other Pakistani cricketers to speak publicly in support of Imran, emphasizing his contribution to Pakistan cricket and the lessons learned by those who played alongside him.

Imran Khan Has Been in Jail Since 2023

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and continues to face legal proceedings in multiple cases.

Several former teammates have previously praised his leadership and achievements in cricket but have generally avoided publicly commenting on his current imprisonment and health situation.

Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja has also discussed Imran’s current health on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

22 Former Captains Send Open Letter

Concern over Imran Khan’s health has also drawn attention from the wider international cricket community.

Last week, 22 former international cricket captains sent an open letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling for adequate medical care for Imran in prison and respect for court orders and his constitutional rights, including access to family visits.

Australia captain Pat Cummins has also publicly supported the former captains’ appeal.

Miandad Calls for Reconciliation

Miandad urged the authorities to move beyond political differences and consider Imran’s contribution to Pakistan.

He said, “We need to bury the hatchet. He is a former prime minister. God forbid, if something happens to him in jail, all of Pakistan will weep.”

Recalling their playing careers, Miandad said he and Imran spent significant periods together with Pakistan and Sussex in English county cricket, describing their relationship as a close one.

The growing public concern among former cricketers and international cricket figures has added further attention to Imran Khan’s health and treatment in custody. However, no independently verified medical report on his current condition or any new official decision regarding his release has been publicly announced.
