Despite various challenges facing the coal industry, Russia continues to maintain a significant position in the global coal market, President Vladimir Putin said. He noted that Russia has the world’s second-largest coal reserves, while ranking third in coal exports and sixth in production.
In a video message marking Miners’ Day, Putin said coal, coke, iron ore and other mineral resources remain one of the foundations of Russia’s national economy. He also emphasized that the country’s abundant natural resources have contributed significantly to its economic strength.

According to Putin, although the coal industry is currently going through a difficult period, Russia continues to maintain a leading position in the international market. At the same time, the country is meeting domestic demand for both coking and thermal coal.
The Russian president said the country produced approximately 440 million metric tons of coal last year. Labor productivity in the mining sector has also increased, rising by approximately 18 percent over the past five years, he added.
Speaking about the future development of the coal industry, Putin said the government would work to improve transportation and logistics systems, ensure workplace safety, improve the quality of life of miners’ families, and develop infrastructure in coal-producing cities and communities.
Putin also highlighted the importance of technological advancement. He said the successful adoption of digital technologies and high-performance modern equipment demonstrates that modern coal mining can become an important industry of the future.
The Russian president further emphasized the need to develop a skilled workforce in the mining sector. He called for greater efforts to improve training opportunities and increase the appeal and prestige of mining-related professions among young people.
Despite pressure on the global coal industry from changes in energy markets, transportation costs and geopolitical developments, Russia is seeking to maintain its position in the international market by relying on its vast natural resources, production capacity and export infrastructure.
