North Korea Under Kim Jong Un Successfully Tests Cluster Bomb Warhead for Ballistic Missile Amid Border Tensions with South Korea
Pyongyang, North Korea | November 1, 2026 | The Global Journal
Amid heightened tensions along the border with South Korea, North Korea has tested a cluster bomb warhead designed for use with tactical ballistic missiles. The test was conducted on Saturday (October 31) as part of ongoing military exercises aimed at enhancing the country's military capabilities to deploy longer-range and more destructive weapons. North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the development on Sunday (November 1).
According to the KCNA report, the primary objective of the test was to assess the effectiveness and operational capabilities of the cluster bomb warhead fitted to a tactical ballistic missile. North Korean officials claimed that the test demonstrated the weapon's extensive destructive power. They said the warhead could destroy an entire target area measuring between 12 and 13 hectares in an instant by unleashing explosives at maximum density.
Military Deployment Planned Within This Year
The director-general of North Korea's Missile Administration stated that military units would be equipped with the capability to use these weapons within the current year. He added that the military would be able to select and deploy appropriate versions of the weapon based on operational objectives and the nature of the intended targets.
Images released by KCNA showed a missile ascending into the sky from a mobile launcher amid a burst of orange flames. Another image depicted multiple cluster bombs striking designated targets simultaneously in an island area.

Series of Weapons Tests Amid Border Tensions
Just days before Saturday's test, North Korea had conducted trials of several other advanced weapons, including attack drones, a new precision-guided torpedo and a medium-range hypersonic missile.
Meanwhile, tensions have persisted in the region following a landmine explosion in the heavily fortified border area between the two Koreas that injured three South Korean soldiers. Pyongyang has denied allegations of involvement in the incident. North Korea has also announced plans to strengthen border security and resume counter-propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers.
Kim Jong Un Absent from the Latest Test
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was not present at Saturday's military exercise. In April, however, he personally observed a test launch of a cluster bomb attached to a ballistic missile, accompanied by his daughter, Ju Ae.
North Korea's continued weapons tests, alongside rising tensions along the inter-Korean border, have once again drawn attention to the security situation on the Korean Peninsula. The latest test underscores Pyongyang's ongoing efforts to expand its missile capabilities and conventional military arsenal.
