King Charles to Congress: the United Kingdom and the United States have always found ways to come together”

King Charles is set to deliver a historic speech aimed at strengthening the long-standing diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and the United States. In his highly anticipated address to both houses of the US Congress on Tuesday, he is expected to say that the two nations “have time and again found ways to come together” and must continue that tradition in the future.
The King is also expected to call for “reconciliation and renewal” between the UK and the US. The visit comes at a time of heightened international political tension, making it a significant diplomatic engagement.
Security in Washington DC has been tightened following a recent shooting incident in the capital, which has raised concerns across the city. King Charles is expected to express his condolences regarding the attack during his speech.
Queen Camilla is accompanying the King on this historic state visit, the first by a British royal since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2007.
In his remarks, King Charles is also expected to stress that in the face of global challenges, unity in defending democratic values—tolerance, freedom, and equality—is more important than ever. He is also likely to highlight support for NATO and Ukraine.
The visit began with the royal couple arriving at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where they were welcomed by US and British officials. They later met President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House.
At the White House, they were hosted for tea and toured a newly expanded beehive in the garden—reflecting King Charles’s well-known interest in beekeeping.
The state visit is being viewed as a “soft power” diplomatic initiative by the UK government, aimed at deepening bilateral ties during the 250th anniversary year of American independence.
Later, the royal couple attended a garden party at the British Embassy in Washington, where more than 600 guests from politics, science, charity, and the military were present.
A notable diplomatic moment of the visit was the serving of beef sandwiches made from tariff-free British beef, following a recently negotiated trade agreement.
King Charles will become only the second British monarch in history to address the US Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech in 1991.

Experts say the visit could mark a new chapter in US–UK relations, although differences remain on issues such as the Iran conflict.
President Trump is also expected to deliver a speech at a state banquet, attended by leading political figures and international guests from both countries.
