President Donald Trump Calls Brazil Election a ‘Disgrace’ After Close Ally Flavio Bolsonaro’s Defeat

Washington, United States | October 30, 2026 | The Global Journal

US President Donald Trump has described Brazil’s presidential election as a “disgrace” following the defeat of his close ally, Flavio Bolsonaro. However, Trump declined to state directly whether he agreed with the election outcome. His remarks came one day after Flavio Bolsonaro and his family arrived in Miami, Florida, after leaving Brazil.

Responding to a reporter’s question on Thursday morning, Trump said, “I thought the election was a great embarrassment to the people of Brazil.”He added, “I watched the election. I didn’t take sides. I let it be. I was asked not to take sides by the president, the current president.”

Commenting further on the election, Trump said, “But when I watched what went down in Brazil, it was a disgrace.” He also pointed to the decline in Brazil’s stock market.

Flavio Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami After Election Defeat

A day before Trump’s remarks, former Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday with his wife and two daughters.

According to a report by The New York Times, Trump and his administration helped the Bolsonaro family leave Brazil. Citing US officials, the newspaper also reported that the family could potentially be granted permanent residency in the United States.

In Sunday’s presidential runoff, Flavio Bolsonaro lost to left-wing incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by more than four million votes. Following the election, Brazil’s currency, the real, fell 12 percent against the US dollar in spot trading, according to the report.

Departure After Passport Surrender Order

Shortly after the election, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Flavio Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports. The measure was intended to prevent him from leaving the country before facing investigation over allegations of embezzlement and money laundering, according to the report.

Flavio reportedly left Brazil secretly under the cover of darkness. He travelled overland with his wife and two daughters into Argentina, where the government of President Javier Milei granted them visas. The family then flew by a small private aircraft to Ecuador before travelling onward to Miami, where they arrived on Wednesday morning.

Flavio Claims to Be Brazil’s ‘True Elected President’

Shortly after arriving in Miami, Flavio Bolsonaro issued a statement declaring himself “the true elected president of Brazil.” He described the allegations against him as a “politically motivated witch-hunt.”

Calling on the international community, he urged it not to “normalise what is happening in Brazil.” He also announced that he would lead the country’s opposition from the United States. However, he presented no evidence to support his claims, including his allegations of electoral fraud.

Meanwhile, Flavio’s own Liberal Party had announced on Monday that it accepted the election results, highlighting a difference between his personal position and the party’s official stance.

Uncertainty Over Possible Extradition

Brazil and the United States have maintained an extradition treaty for several decades. However, it remains unclear whether Washington would hand Flavio Bolsonaro over to Brazilian authorities or whether Brazil would formally indict him and request his extradition.

On Wednesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court also dismissed rumours that a search warrant had been issued for Flavio’s residence. Further statements from the court and relevant authorities will be important in determining the progress of the investigation and any potential legal action.

Parallels With His Father Jair Bolsonaro’s US Stay

Flavio’s father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, also travelled to Florida after losing his re-election bid in 2022. While he was in the United States, his supporters attempted to orchestrate a coup in Brazil. At the time, some voices in Brazil called for his extradition from the United States.

Jair Bolsonaro eventually returned to Brazil and is currently under house arrest there.

New Political Controversy in Brazil

Flavio Bolsonaro’s departure for the United States, his allegations surrounding the election and Trump’s comments have brought Brazil’s political situation back into international focus. Questions are emerging over relations between Washington and Brasília, the possibility of extradition and the future of Brazil’s domestic political tensions.

Although Trump declined to take a direct position on the election outcome, his description of the contest as a “disgrace” made his dissatisfaction clear. Meanwhile, no evidence has been presented to substantiate Flavio’s allegations of vote theft, and his own party has already stated that it accepts the election results.
