Secret Meeting on President Trump at EU Headquarters: 'Therapy Night' Signals Europe's New Security Strategy
The Global Journal | Brussels | July 7, 2026
A confidential meeting attended by nearly 30 European heads of state and government at the European Union headquarters earlier this year has emerged as a major topic of international attention. According to a report published by Firstpost, citing The Wall Street Journal, the gathering was conducted under extraordinary secrecy, with participants barred from bringing mobile phones, recording devices, or aides into the room.
The report says the meeting focused on U.S. President Donald Trump's policies toward Europe, the continent's evolving security challenges, and the future of transatlantic relations. Discussions reportedly continued for hours past midnight, with several leaders openly criticizing Trump's approach. The atmosphere was described as so candid that some participants jokingly referred to the gathering as a "therapy night."
Greenland Crisis Raised Alarm
According to the report, the meeting took place during the third week of January, when European leaders were increasingly concerned about the possibility of U.S. action involving Greenland.
French troops reportedly joined Danish forces in strengthening security on the island, while Denmark prepared contingency measures, including plans to disable airstrips and stockpile medical supplies in case of a potential military confrontation.
Although no U.S. military operation ultimately took place, the episode reportedly served as a wake-up call for European leaders.
"There Is No Going Back"
French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly told fellow leaders that Europe had reached a turning point in its relationship with Washington.
"We are drawing a line here," Macron said.
He also warned that Europe could no longer afford to rely excessively on the United States for its security, adding:
"There is no going back."
Macron has long advocated for greater European strategic autonomy in defense and foreign policy.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also warned that Europe risked becoming overly dependent on the United States if it failed to strengthen its own capabilities.
A New European Security Approach
According to the report, one of the meeting's central conclusions was that Europe must increasingly become the guarantor of its own security and prepare for scenarios in which American support may not be available.
To that end, European governments have accelerated efforts to increase defense spending, modernize military capabilities, strengthen joint defense industries, and enhance strategic cooperation across the continent.
Reducing Dependence on U.S. Technology
The report further states that Europe's efforts now extend beyond defense into technology and digital infrastructure.
Countries including France and the Netherlands are reportedly replacing some American software with European open-source alternatives in government systems. At the same time, investments in space technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are being expanded to reduce long-term dependence on U.S. technology providers.
No official joint statement has been released by European leaders regarding the reported meeting. The details remain based on reporting by The Wall Street Journal, as cited by Firstpost.
