World-renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk has decided to acquire his artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI through his space research company SpaceX, marking another major step in consolidating his various business ventures
.
SpaceX confirmed the deal through an official memo published on its website. In the statement, Elon Musk said the merger would create a powerful “innovation engine,” bringing artificial intelligence, rocket technology, space-based internet, and media under one roof.
Although the specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, sources familiar with the matter said:
🔹 xAI valuation: approximately $125 billion
🔹 SpaceX valuation: approximately $1 trillion
This valuation makes SpaceX the most valuable private company in the world.
Previously, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company Tesla invested $2 billion in xAI. Addressing Tesla investors, Musk said he envisions xAI acting as an “orchestra conductor” for Tesla factories, where autonomous robots and AI systems will manage production. At the same time, Tesla announced it would discontinue two vehicle models to focus on robot manufacturing—one of the most significant strategic shifts in the company’s history.
Despite objections from some shareholders, Tesla moved forward with the investment. In a vote held last year, the number of opposing and abstaining votes exceeded those in favor.
Meanwhile, market analysts believe SpaceX is preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO). PitchBook senior analyst Emily Zheng said the xAI acquisition shows clear signs of IPO preparation.
“The enormous cost of compute, infrastructure, and energy required to operate AI is pushing major startups toward public markets,” Zheng said. “Consolidating companies like xAI allows SpaceX to present a strong and capital-efficient growth narrative to investors.”
In the SpaceX memo, Elon Musk also stated that the solution to AI’s future energy demands lies in space.
“In the long term, space-based AI is the only way to scale,” he wrote.
Musk said the immediate focus would be launching AI satellites from Earth. He added that space-based data centers could eventually enable self-sustaining bases on the Moon, a full civilization on Mars, and ultimately human expansion across the universe.
It is worth noting that xAI’s flagship product, the Grok chatbot, has recently come under scrutiny over its AI image-generation capabilities. The European Commission and the UK regulator Ofcom have launched investigations into X (formerly Twitter) over allegations that Grok was used to create sexualized images. In response, xAI announced in January that it had imposed new restrictions on Grok’s image-editing features.
At present, Neuralink and The Boring Company remain the only Elon Musk ventures that have not yet been merged into a larger corporate structure.
