Egypt Pledges Necessary Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Intensifying Houthi Attacks, Sisi Seeks Parliamentary Approval for Military Assistance

Cairo, Egypt | October 18, 2026 | The Global Journal

Egypt has declared its readiness to provide necessary support to Saudi Arabia to safeguard its security, stability, and territorial integrity as Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen intensify their attacks. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called an emergency parliamentary session to seek authorisation for the country’s armed forces to assist in defending Saudi Arabia if the kingdom requests such support.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Egyptian presidency reaffirmed its commitment to providing Saudi Arabia with all necessary and possible forms of assistance. However, no final decision has been announced regarding whether Saudi Arabia has formally requested military assistance or whether Egypt will deploy troops directly।

Houthis Intensify Attacks on Saudi Arabia

According to Reuters, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have recently targeted Riyadh’s international airport and Saudi Aramco, the kingdom’s state-owned oil giant. The attacks come amid renewed fighting between the Houthis and forces backed by Saudi Arabia and aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government, following the collapse of a truce.

Egypt’s position is drawing particular attention as Saudi Arabia seeks to strengthen its security and address the possibility of further regional escalation. Attacks on the energy infrastructure and critical facilities of Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest oil exporters, could raise concerns not only about regional security but also about international energy supplies.

In its statement, the Egyptian presidency said Cairo would provide all necessary and possible forms of support to protect Saudi Arabia’s security and stability, resources, territorial integrity, and Islamic holy sites.

Sisi Seeks Parliamentary Authorisation for Military Assistance

President Sisi has convened an emergency parliamentary session to seek authorisation for Egypt’s armed forces to assist in Saudi Arabia’s defence if requested by the kingdom.

A parliamentary vote was expected on Sunday, but Reuters reported, citing two lawmakers and local media, that discussions could continue into Monday.

The presidential statement followed a meeting of Egypt’s National Defence Council, chaired by Sisi and attended by the speaker of parliament, the prime minister, and the army chief.

In a speech on Saturday, Sisi said Egypt would act in accordance with the guidance of Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman regarding assistance to the kingdom. The Saudi crown prince visited Egypt on September 15 and met Sisi after fighting in Yemen reignited.

Longstanding Strategic Partnership Between Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Egypt and Saudi Arabia are important strategic and economic partners in the Middle East. The two countries have maintained longstanding cooperation in defence, regional security, trade, and investment.

Following the military ouster of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states provided Egypt with billions of dollars in financial assistance, central-bank deposits, and investments.

Egypt had also joined the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to support the internationally recognised government against the Houthi rebels. However, Egypt played a limited direct combat role in that campaign.

Concerns Over a Wider Regional Conflict

Egypt’s latest pledge of support to Saudi Arabia adds a significant dimension to the regional security situation surrounding the conflict in Yemen. If Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia continue and Egypt receives formal parliamentary authorisation for military assistance, Cairo’s role in the conflict could expand.

However, the final parliamentary decision, any formal request from Saudi Arabia, and the nature of Egypt’s potential military involvement remain unclear. For now, Egypt’s announcement represents a commitment of political and security support for the kingdom rather than confirmation of an imminent troop deployment.
