Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Who Made History at 37, Takes Up Teaching and Mentoring Role

Sydney, Australia | October 27, 2026 | The Global Journal

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is embarking on a new chapter in academia, taking on a role focused on teaching and mentoring young people in leadership. According to a report published by The Guardian on October 27, Ardern has joined the University of Sydney in Australia as a lecturer and mentor. She will work with students on leadership, social cohesion and public health.

The position is not a full-time job. Instead, she will share her political experience and leadership insights through special masterclasses, lectures and discussions with students.

Ardern to Focus on Leadership and Public Health

According to the report, Ardern’s teaching and mentoring activities at the University of Sydney will focus on leadership, social cohesion and public health. She will draw on her experience of decision-making and leadership during major political and social crises.

The report notes that, since stepping away from politics, Ardern has remained interested in how leaders can act effectively and responsibly under difficult circumstances. Her new role will give her an opportunity to share those experiences with younger generations.

Became New Zealand’s Prime Minister at Just 37

Jacinda Ardern rose to international prominence in 2017 when she became New Zealand’s prime minister at the age of just 37. During her time in office, the country faced major challenges, including the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, the White Island volcanic eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government’s responses, public health policies and leadership during these crises drew considerable international attention. In particular, Ardern’s expressions of solidarity with the victims and their families following the Christchurch attacks, along with her messages of social unity, attracted widespread attention.

A New Chapter After Leaving Politics

After stepping down as prime minister in 2023, Ardern became involved in international academic and public policy initiatives outside politics. She also participated in research and academic programmes at Harvard University in the United States.

According to the report, she currently lives in Sydney, Australia, with her husband and child. Her new role at the University of Sydney offers another opportunity to apply her political experience to education, leadership development and discussions on public health.

An Opportunity to Share Experience with Young Leaders

Ardern’s appointment will give students an opportunity to learn directly from her experience in government, crisis management and public policymaking. Her political career and subsequent academic work may also contribute to wider discussions about leadership and public service.
