Trump Made a Major Mistake by Engaging in an Unnecessary War Against Iran, Says Former U.S. President Barack Obama in Strong Criticism

Cleveland, Ohio, USA | October 28, 2026 | The Global Journal

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has sharply criticised President Donald Trump’s administration ahead of the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 3. Describing the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran as “unnecessary,” Obama said Trump had made one wrong decision after another, with the biggest mistake being the launch of a war that nobody had asked for.

Obama delivered the remarks at an election rally in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 26, in support of Democratic Party candidates. He strongly criticised Trump’s foreign policy, handling of the war and overall administration. His speech was aimed at encouraging supporters to vote against Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

Obama Calls the Iran War a Major Mistake

Speaking at the rally, Obama said the current president had made a series of poor decisions. He argued that the most significant mistake was starting an unnecessary war that nobody had called for.

Obama also referred to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, negotiated during his presidency. He said the deal was designed to limit Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons through diplomatic negotiations. In his view, diplomacy could have achieved that objective without resorting to military strikes.

Obama further argued that the situation had become more complicated after Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement.

Concerns Over the Strait of Hormuz and Rising Energy Prices

The economic consequences of the Iran war were also central to Obama’s remarks. He said the conflict had resulted in attacks on U.S. military bases and allies, injuries to American service members and loss of life.

According to Obama, the war had depleted U.S. missile stockpiles and increased uncertainty over global oil transportation as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted. These developments have put upward pressure on fuel and diesel prices.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for international energy trade. Disruptions to shipping through the waterway can significantly affect global energy supplies and market prices. Obama blamed the Trump administration’s war policy for contributing to the situation.

Trump Hits Back, Calls Obama an ‘Incompetent President’

Following Obama’s criticism, President Donald Trump launched a counterattack on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing Obama as an “extremely incompetent president.”

Trump also criticised the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, alleging that the Obama administration had appeased Iran by providing it with billions of dollars and paving the way for the country to acquire nuclear weapons in the future. These are political allegations made by Trump and should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.

Political Battle Intensifies Ahead of Midterm Elections

The November 3 midterm elections will feature several closely watched contests that could determine control of Congress. In Ohio, Obama campaigned for Senate candidate Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. He also delivered remarks in Michigan on the same day in support of Democratic candidates.

Obama also accused the Trump administration of fostering chaos, corruption and incompetence while contributing to rising living costs. His criticism extended beyond the Iran war to include immigration policy and economic decisions.

War Deepens Political Divisions in the United States

Obama’s remarks and Trump’s response have highlighted the deep political divisions in the United States over the Iran war. Democratic leaders are questioning the administration’s military strategy, the economic costs of the conflict and the alternatives offered by diplomacy. Trump, meanwhile, continues to defend his Iran policy and his decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The debate could influence voter sentiment and campaign messaging ahead of the midterm elections. However, the conflict’s actual impact, movements in global energy markets and the election outcome will depend on how events unfold in the coming days.
