Flávio Bolsonaro Leaves Brazil for the United States With His Family After Election Defeat to Lula da Silva Secrecy Surrounding Miami Arrival Sparks Controversy
Miami, United States | October 28, 2026 | The Global Journal
Brazilian senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has arrived in the United States with his family following his defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s presidential election. On Wednesday, October 28, his private aircraft landed at Opa-locka Executive Airport in Miami, Florida, according to CNN Brasil. Television footage reportedly showed him disembarking with his wife and two daughters. The family was later seen leaving the airport with umbrellas covering their faces.
Flávio’s departure came as Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his passport and investigations into allegations including money laundering were ongoing. A source close to him told CNN that he had left Brazil fearing arrest. However, the report stated that no arrest warrant had been issued against him at the time of his departure.
Entry Into the United States Approved by the Trump Administration
According to CNN, US President Donald Trump approved Flávio Bolsonaro and his family’s entry into the United States. A Trump adviser said US officials were aware of the Brazilian court’s passport-surrender order but nevertheless decided to allow the family to enter the country.
Earlier, two US officials had told CNN that visas were being issued for Flávio, his wife and their two daughters.
When questioned by journalists, Trump indicated that he had agreed to the Bolsonaro family’s entry into the United States. He described them as “good people” and called Brazil’s election “strange” and “terrible.”
However, it remains unclear whether Trump and Flávio spoke directly by telephone before the senator left Brazil.

Court Orders Flávio to Surrender His Passport Before Departure
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Flávio to surrender his passport within 24 hours. According to CNN Brasil, after he failed to submit it within the specified period, Brazil’s Federal Police cancelled his Brazilian passport.
In a video previously posted on Instagram, Flávio said police had personally informed him of the court order and told him not to leave the country. In the same video, he denied planning to flee Brazil.
News of his arrival in the United States with his family subsequently emerged. The report cited legal experts who said that failing to comply with the court order could create further legal complications. No arrest warrant was in force when he left Brazil, but it remains unclear whether additional legal action will follow over the alleged failure to comply with the order.
From Argentina Through Ecuador to Florida
Flávio’s travel route initially caused confusion. Argentine media outlet Infobae reported that he had attempted to travel to the United States through Argentina. The Argentine government initially said it had no record of his entry into the country.
Later, Argentina’s immigration authorities announced on social media platform X that Flávio, his wife and their two daughters had entered Argentina from Brazil on Tuesday night. The authorities said they had valid travel documents and faced no legal impediment to entering the country.
According to published reports, the family later travelled by private aircraft to Guayaquil, Ecuador. After refuelling there, the aircraft continued to Florida. CNN Brasil reported that it landed at Opa-locka Executive Airport in Miami.
Corruption and Money-Laundering Investigations
Flávio Bolsonaro is facing investigations in Brazil involving allegations of money laundering. According to CNN, one investigation concerns a potentially illegal online betting platform. Another focuses on the financing of Dark Horse, a biographical film about his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Brazil’s Federal Police suspect that funds from Banco Master may have been connected to the film’s financing. The bank collapsed in 2025 and was linked in reports to a Ponzi-style financial scandal involving approximately $7 billion.
Flávio Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing. The allegations remain under investigation and should not be treated as proven crimes unless established through the legal process.

Joins Brazilian Conservative Figures Based in the United States
By moving to the United States, Flávio has joined a group of Brazilian conservative political figures living outside Brazil. They include his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem and podcaster Paulo Figueiredo.
Flávio’s departure also recalls his father Jair Bolsonaro’s move to Florida after losing the 2022 election. Jair Bolsonaro stayed in Orlando for approximately three months.
Jair Bolsonaro and his associates were later prosecuted over allegations of attempting to overturn the 2022 election result. CNN reported that the former president was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison.
Lula’s Reaction and the Future of Brazil’s Opposition
President Lula da Silva criticised Flávio’s departure. Speaking at a rally with supporters on Tuesday, Lula reportedly described it as “shameful.” He argued that Flávio should have remained in Brazil and explained his position before the courts if he had nothing to hide.
Following the election results, Flávio initially refused to accept the outcome and said he would seek to have it annulled. His Liberal Party later acknowledged the result, although party leader Valdemar Costa Neto said the questions raised about the election required proper explanations.
Flávio’s campaign manager, Rogério Marinho, said the senator’s departure had surprised the party. According to Marinho, discussions had taken place as recently as the previous day about Flávio’s potential role in leading the opposition.
Flávio Bolsonaro’s arrival in the United States with his family after the election defeat has triggered a new political controversy in Brazil. The court order to surrender his passport, ongoing investigations and reports that the Trump administration approved his entry have added further significance to the episode.
However, any final assessment of his reasons for leaving Brazil, the allegations under investigation and the potential legal consequences should take into account court documents and statements from the relevant authorities. The incident is also likely to keep attention focused on the future leadership of Brazil’s opposition and its implications for US–Brazil relations.
