Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref Arrives in Tajikistan to Attend SCO Heads of Government Meeting

Dushanbe, Tajikistan | October 19, 2026 | The Global Journal

Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref has arrived in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, to participate in the meeting of the Heads of Government of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, regional cooperation, the expansion of economic and trade relations, and stronger technological partnerships are among Tehran’s key priorities during the visit.

Aref landed at Dushanbe International Airport, where he was welcomed by Tajikistan’s First Deputy Prime Minister, Hokim Kholiqzoda. The Iranian vice president is on a two-day visit to the country.

Focus on Economic and Trade Cooperation

During his visit, Aref will participate in the SCO Heads of Government meeting and hold bilateral talks with the prime ministers of several participating countries. Discussions are expected to cover issues of mutual interest and opportunities to expand cooperation.

One of Iran’s principal objectives at the Dushanbe meeting is to strengthen economic and trade ties among SCO member states. Tehran also aims to improve regional market connectivity and make greater use of opportunities for mutual trade.

Plans to Strengthen Transport and Logistics Connectivity

Enhancing cooperation in transport and logistics is another important Iranian priority. Discussions may focus on leveraging geographical advantages and regional connectivity to improve trade links and the movement of goods among member states.

For Iran, such cooperation could create opportunities to expand regional trade and strengthen economic connections with other SCO members.

Cooperation in Advanced Technologies and Artificial Intelligence

Alongside economic cooperation, Iran is seeking to expand collaboration in advanced technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). Knowledge-sharing, innovation and technological partnerships are among the areas that could help strengthen the capabilities of participating countries.

Amid rapid changes in the global economy and technology sector, closer technological cooperation among SCO members could create new opportunities for regional development.

SCO’s Role in Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a multilateral platform that promotes political, economic and security cooperation among countries across the Eurasian region. Its meetings provide opportunities for member states to coordinate on trade, transport, technology and regional development.

Through its participation in the Dushanbe meeting, Tehran aims to deepen economic and commercial relations with fellow members while broadening the scope of regional cooperation.

The bilateral discussions scheduled during Aref’s two-day visit, alongside the SCO meeting, could help shape Iran’s future priorities for regional partnerships.
